What You'll Do
With the Freedom Quitline, eligible participants will have 2 ½ times better chance of quitting smoking compared to other Quitlines. Enrolled participants will receive four proactive, telephone-based smoking cessation counseling sessions along with eight weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) sent directly to their homes. Three months later, participants will be contacted to check in regarding their smoking status. If they are smoking at that time, they will be given a second chance to quit.
One-on-One Phone Counseling
Individuals who call the Freedom Quitline will receive 4 personalized counseling sessions with a Counselor that is highly trained and experienced in Motivational Interviewing.
Motivational Interviewing is a counseling style that helps people quit smoking by assisting individuals with understanding and resolving their uncertainties about changing behavior.
In an analysis of 14 studies, including over 10,000 smokers, motivational interviewing was shown to be more effective for the treatment of tobacco dependence than traditional forms of counseling.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy
There are a number of medications that can help people quit.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products (gum, patch, inhaler, nasal spray, oral spray and lozenge) deliver nicotine orally, nasally or transdermal, substituting nicotine obtained from tobacco and reducing the severity of withdrawal symptoms and cravings linked to tobacco cessation.
In an analysis of 119 studies and 51,225 individuals, those that used NRT were almost 2 times more likely to successfully quit smoking compared to placebo (Cahill et al., 2014).
Even more impressive, a recent study found that NRT was as effective as Chantix in promoting smoking cessation among smokers motivated to quit smoking.
Individuals who call the Freedom Quitline will receive 8 weeks of free NRT in the form of the nicotine patch mailed directly to their homes. If participants are still smoking at the 3 month follow-up we provide them with an additional 8-16 weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy.
Not One, but Two Quit Attempts
Most smokers are interested in quitting and make multiple quit attempts before they are successful.
It has been estimated that as many as 75% of smokers who successfully quit will relapse within 6 months.
The Freedom Quitline is uniquely designed to not only help smokers quit, but to help smokers that may fail to quit initially or relapse within the first 3 months try to quit again.
